Wix or WordPress? How Fort Walton Beach Businesses Should Choose a Website Platform
For most small businesses in Fort Walton Beach, Wix Studio is the better platform. For a narrow slice of them, WordPress is. That is the honest answer, and the reason it matters is not the build day, it is the next five years: the platform you pick decides how much of your week the website quietly eats.
We work in both. We build most client sites on Wix Studio, and we still handle WordPress migrations and maintenance when a business genuinely needs one. So this is not a pitch for a platform. It is the same conversation we have on a first call with a contractor off Beal Parkway, a salon owner in Navarre, or a counseling practice in Pensacola.
The short answer
Pick Wix Studio if you are a service business, a shop, a practice or a contractor who needs a professional site that loads fast, ranks locally, and does not require a developer every time your hours change. Pick WordPress if you need genuinely custom functionality, a large product catalog, a membership or course system, or you already have a developer on payroll who maintains it.
Everything below is the reasoning behind that split.
The market share number does not mean what people think
As of September 2026, WordPress powers 40.3% of all websites and holds 58.8% of the content management system market, according to W3Techs CMS usage statistics. Wix sits at about 4.2% of all websites. That gap is real, and it is also close to meaningless for your decision.
Most of those WordPress installs are blogs, publishers, agencies and sites built a decade ago that nobody has touched since. Very few of them are six-page local service websites for a business with one location and two employees. Popularity across the whole internet is not evidence about what fits a Fort Walton Beach HVAC company.
Where the real cost shows up
Owners usually compare the build price. The build price is the smaller half of the number. With WordPress you are also signing up for an ongoing list:
Hosting, chosen and paid for separately
Annual licences for the premium plugins that make the site work
Core, theme and plugin updates, and the occasional update that breaks another plugin
Security hardening and malware cleanup if something slips through
Backups, and a plan for restoring them at 9pm on a Friday
Developer hours for anything beyond editing text
Wix Studio folds hosting, security, updates and backups into the platform. That is genuinely the whole argument for it, and for a business owner who is already doing payroll, scheduling and estimates, it is a big argument. If you want the fuller breakdown of what a build actually runs, we wrote one up in how much a small business website costs.
For what it is worth, our own pricing is published as flat packages with no hidden fees and no inflated agency markup. You can request a website quote and see the number before anything starts.
What about SEO?
The line that Wix is bad for SEO is roughly a decade out of date, and it was never quite true in the way people repeated it. Google does not rank platforms. It ranks pages. Nothing in Google's SEO Starter Guide mentions your CMS. It talks about titles, useful content, crawlable links, good images and a site people actually want to use.
Where platforms do differ is consistency of page experience. Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds ask for Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint at 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits. A well-hosted WordPress site with a lean theme clears that easily. A WordPress site with fourteen plugins and a page builder on cheap shared hosting usually does not. Wix Studio is more predictable by default because the hosting and delivery are not yours to misconfigure.
Speed is not a vanity metric here on the Emerald Coast either. A lot of your traffic is someone on a phone with two bars, sitting in a truck. We went deeper on that in why a slow website quietly costs you customers, and on the design side in does website design affect SEO.
Who should actually pick WordPress
You sell hundreds or thousands of products with complex variants and integrations.
You need a membership area, a learning platform, or a custom database application.
You publish at real volume and have an editorial team with defined roles.
You already have a developer or agency retainer that covers maintenance, and you are happy with it.
You have a hard requirement to own and self-host every file.
Who should pick Wix Studio
You are a local service business and the website's job is to get the phone to ring.
You want to update your hours, a photo or a service page yourself, in five minutes, without a ticket.
You do not want to think about hosting, SSL certificates, plugin updates or backups, ever.
You need bookings, forms, a small shop or a blog without bolting on five separate tools.
You want the site live in days, not in a quarter.
That last point is not marketing language. Most of the Wix Studio sites we build for small businesses go live inside a week once the content and branding are in hand.
Switching platforms without losing your rankings
This is where migrations go wrong, and it has nothing to do with which platform you moved to. If your URLs change and nothing redirects the old ones, every link and every ranking pointing at those pages lands on a 404. Before you move:
Export a full list of your current URLs and keep the slugs identical wherever you can.
Write a 301 redirect for every URL that does have to change, before launch day.
Carry over page titles, meta descriptions and image alt text. They are easy to lose and expensive to rewrite.
Resubmit your sitemap in Search Console and watch coverage for two weeks.
Check the website link on your Google Business Profile still points somewhere real.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix bad for SEO?
No. Wix supports custom titles and meta descriptions, editable slugs, 301 redirects, structured data, sitemaps, canonical tags and Search Console verification. Google ranks individual pages on relevance and quality, not on the software that produced them. A thin, vague WordPress page loses to a specific, useful Wix page every time, and the reverse is equally true.
Do I own my website if it is built on Wix?
You own your domain, your content, your images, your customer data and your brand. What you do not own is the platform code, which is also true of the hosting, the theme and most of the plugins on a typical WordPress site. If total file-level ownership is a genuine business requirement for you, that is a legitimate reason to choose WordPress.
Can I move from Wix to WordPress later, or the other way?
Yes, in both directions, and we do both. It is a real project rather than a button, mostly because of the redirect and metadata work described above. Pick the platform that fits the next three years and you will probably never need to.
What actually decides whether my site ranks in Fort Walton Beach?
A complete and active Google Business Profile, real reviews, a page for each service you actually sell, consistent name and address information across the web, and content that answers the questions local customers ask. None of those five things is a platform feature. All five are work.
Not sure which side of the line you are on?
Most of the time this is a fifteen minute conversation, not a research project. Tell us what your business does, who you need to reach and what has frustrated you about your current site, and we will tell you honestly which platform we would put you on, including when the answer is the one we build on less often. You can see how we approach builds on our website development page, or look through the portfolio to see what we have built for businesses along the Emerald Coast.
